Fire Protection
On 6 December 1972,
representatives of the Town of Colchester, the
Colchester Center Volunteer Fire Department
(CCVFD), and the St Michael’s Fire Department (SMFD) signed an
agreement that delegated to the latter brigade the principal
responsibility for providing fire protection services within Fire
District No. 1. Later that month, the agreement was ratified by the
District’s Prudential Committee. Since its founding in 1970,
St Michael’s Fire & Rescue had
admirably served the people and business of the District, as well as
elsewhere.
Previously, fire protection services in the Fire District were provided by
the City of Winooski Fire Department, under terms mutually agreed upon
by the City, the District, and the Town of Colchester.
In November 2005, the Robert E. Sutton Fire and Rescue Station was
opened on the campus of Saint Michael’s College, the first fire house
located within the District. This state-of-art facility enables St
Michael’s Fire & Rescue to respond quickly to calls both from within
the District and from neighboring municipalities. All the members of
St Michael’s Fire & Rescue are required to attain and perform to high
professional standards.
Public fire hydrants throughout the District are owned and maintained
by the District in conjunction with its water system.
To report fire or rescue
emergencies: 911.
